Session 2: Big Tech: Regulation or Competition Law
April 6, 2020 12:15 to 13:30

Many digital multi-sided platform markets - such as search, app stores, social networks - have become highly concentrated. We also observe the development of digital ecosystems, whereby individual firms have strong positions across a range of linked markets. Competition policy is designed to limit market power and its exploitation, but is it enough? If there is a need for some form of regulation, what form might it take? This Plenary will consider these highly topical questions, from academic, policy and business perspectives.

Session 80: Inequality: Firms, Labour Markets and Redistribution
April 7, 2020 15:30 to 16:45

Discussion of inequalities increasingly defines economic and political debate. Concerns abound that the poor are being left behind by the rich, the young by the old, the regions by the metropolis, the unskilled by the highly educated. The session follows the recent launch of the IFS Deaton Review: Inequality in the 21 st Century https://www.ifs.org.uk/ inequality/ The focus of the review is on recent changes in inequalities and the challenges for social science and for policy. The focus in this session will be on inequalities that arise though work and focus on the role of firms, market power, labour markets and redistribution. Session 84: What Should An Economist Know?
April 7, 2020 17:00 to 18:30

A scientific paradigm in economics must take a position on what people are like, what are the rules of the game that govern how we interact both with one another and with nature in producing our livelihoods, how we evaluate outcomes, how the rules of the game change, what questions constitute the core inquiries of the discipline, and what principles are used to determine which answers are said to constitute economic knowledge. Knowledge of the paradigm is “what an economist should know”. This session will ask what the economics paradigm should be today.

Session 131: Mainstreaming heterodoxy? Is the distinction between 'mainstream' and 'heterodox' economics breaking down? Should it? Can it?
April 8, 2020 15:30 to 17:00

In recent years ‘mainstream’ economics, particularly macroeconomics, has come under renewed challenge from a range of ‘heterodox’ schools – such as post-Keynesian, institutionalist, evolutionary, complexity, feminist, ecological and behavioural economics. This session will discuss how far the distinctions between ‘mainstream’ and ‘heterodox’ are useful. What is ‘mainstream’ economics anyway? How far can it incorporate heterodox critiques? If heterodox economists provide better explanatory theories, shouldn’t they become ‘mainstream’? Why haven’t they?
